Port Royal is considered by some to be one of the finest living areas to be found anywhere in the world. Although these days Port Royal is synonymous with lavish spending, opulent living and the jet-set lifestyle of its residents, this was not always the case and it may not have been the vision of Port Royal, as seen by its original founder and developer, John Glen Sample. A retired advertising executive from Chicago, Illinois, John and his wife purchased property in Naples between 1938 and 1950, totaling about two square miles and costing about $54,000. Named for the famous Jamaican pirate haven, Sample set out to market Port Royal to potential homebuyers in his own way, insisting on personally screening and approving each applicant.
In 1959, Sample created the members-only Port Royal Club, and later established the Hole in the Wall golf course, the second in Naples (Naples Beach Club is first) and the second amenity for Port Royal residents, a new concept at the time. Driven by his vision of what Port Royal should be, Sample’s final selections were not movie stars, celebrities, sports heroes or high-level personages. They were just ordinary people and self-made successful businessowners, with one common goal-to live life to the fullest and fulfill their dreams.
